Stay: Our Airbnb in Kyoto, Japan

This was the first accommodation we booked for our trip to Japan, and it was done in a hurry because I noticed that Airbnbs were getting booked out and I started to panic! Turns out I had more time than I thought and so while it might not have been my first choice, we still really liked this place and loved the quiet location.

The ‘check in’ process was completely self-serve. We were given simple instructions and were able to easily fetch the key out of the mailbox. As introverts, we both enjoyed the private check in without needing to make small talk.

This airbnb was our base for exploring Kyoto and surrounds and we spent 3 days here. There was a Lawson just up the road towards Kyoto station so this is where we got most of our breakfasts from when we had an early start (trying to beat the crowds at tourist spots).

There are several locations to choose from when you’re in Kyoto. If you’re looking to explore Kyoto over a few days, you may want to stay closer to downtown Kyoto, where all of the shopping and restaurants are (you’ll need to catch another train in from Kyoto station). If you’re looking for something more traditional, then you could stay in Gion (“geisha district”), although from what I saw, it was a bit more expensive and also harder to get to. Because we weren’t just exploring Kyoto downtown and wanted to explore nearby places really early by train, we stayed close to Kyoto station.

Because we’ve checked off a lot of the tourist ‘must see’ places during this stay, we might stay closer to downtown Kyoto next time (because food) in a hotel (because comfort).
